Orchid Classics - ORC10003
This CD aims to show the incredible integration of all the different art forms that took place in Paris during the first half of the 20th Century. Stravinsky, Milhaud and Poulenc were constantly involved both socially and professionally with figures like Diaghilev, Picasso and Cocteau. The idea of the CD is to give a real sense of the effect these great creative minds had on each other, of the way boundaries were removed - Diaghilev reinventing the ballet, Stravinsky composing tangos, and Cocteau rewriting Greek myths.

Although Ludwig Thuille's reputation has been overshadowed by his close friend and contemporary Richard Strauss, he was a well-known and justly celebrated composer in his day and he has left to the repertoire a number of rarely-heard jewels. This new disc by Conchord features two of his most important and beautiful masterpieces. A "must have" for anyone interested in late romantic German music.

GEORGE CRUMB - VOICE OF THE WHALEMakrokosmos for amplified piano
A Little Suite for Christmas, AD1979 for piano
Vox balaenae for three masked players (electric flute, electric cello & electric piano)
Black Box - BBM 1076
Established as a unique voice in contemporary music, George Crumb is celebrated for his colourful musical vision, and for his ability to meld exciting instrumental effects with a distinctive musical language. Described as "a keyboard magician", Andrew Russo is the ideal interpreter of Crumb's piano music, while Conchord is renowned for its exceptional performances of recent works, an aptitude brilliantly displayed on this disc.
Vox Balanae (Voice of the Whale) also makes great demands of the performers, with its cadenza-like passages deftly conveyed by Conchord. With references to Strauss's Also Sprach Zarathustra, this is a work that spans poignant lyricism and majestic intensity of great beauty.

"...flawless control..sonorous richness...very enjoyable" (BBC Music Magazine Five Star Review)
A seductive collection of fascinating French chamber works and songs, performed with effortless grace and flair by the outstanding musicians of Conchord.
Acclaimed ensemble Conchord performs an enchanting collection of rarely-heard music by Loeffler, Duruflé and Pierné. Sensual and intimate, these works epitomise the music of early 20th-century France, with their fluid lines and unusual textures sensitively captured by Conchord.
Though born in Berlin, Charles Loeffler claimed to hail from Alsace, so strongly did he identify with the French aesthetic. His Five Songs set poetry by French poets Baudelaire and Verlaine, and his musical style recalls Franck, Chausson and Debussy. Add to this a Russian sense of instrumental colour, and the result is a fascinating concoction of expressive and evocative musical elements.
Pierné's Sonata Da Camera is reminiscent of Debussy's seminal Sonata for Flute, Viola and Harp in its poignant colours and intricate textures, while Duruflé's Op.3 reveals a different style from that of his famous Requiem in writing that recalls Ravel. Throughout this disc, Conchord plays with a finesse that perfectly communicates this exquisite selection of music.
